Little Mermaids

The mermaid, or siren, is mythological aquatic creature with a female human head and torso and the tail of a fish.

Since I was a child I have been really fashinated by theese character which I always imagined as beautiful and elusive behind its mistery.
I dedicated two of my first dolls to this theme, that I would like to introduce you.They are Lulu and Melody, two mermaid sisters with a lacy fishtail and long wavy hair. Both are modeled from air dry clay and decorated with care.

Sin da quando ero bambina sono stata molto affascinata da questo personaggio che ho sempre immaginato come bello e sfuggente dietro il suo mistero.Ho dedicato due delle mie prime bambole a questo tema, che vi vorrei presentare.Sono Lulu e Melody, due sorelle sirene, con una coda di pizzo e lunghi capelli ondulati. Entrambe sono modellate a mano e decorate con cura.

On the beach..

I am really impressed on how strong is the power of the sea on my mood. Every summer I try to take advantage from this as much as possible, and my long lasting dream is to move to live in a seaside place. Unfortunately this is not possible at the moment, so while I wait for things to change I am trying to translate this need into a positive creative urge.

In the last days I found out some old pictures of bathing suits of the beginning of last century, and I found out that this was really inspiring to me. Old swimsuits were similar to regular dresses, they were made from lighter textiles but kept the lengt of the skirts for modesty's sake. Years and inches of fabric had to pass, until by 1910 bathing suits no longer needed to camouflage the contours of the female body. Fortunately, during this period, the rules of modesty didn't forbid to indulge on decorations, patterns and colors. This allowed women to adorn their super covered bodyes with stripes, polkadots, decorated stockings, so to escape from the monotony of costumes.

Thinking about theese women some days ago I realized a new piece of my production of dolls of which I am really fond.  

Its name is Adeline at the seaside, and it's a very sweet character of my collection. I realized her with air dry clay and decorater her with a retro swimsuit made of black stetch cotton and an old hand embroidered cotton canvas. Adeline has also a pink lifebuoy made of plastic and decorated with cotton canvas and a tiny rope.

Sono sempre stupita da quanto forte sia forte potere del mare dal mio umore. Ogni estate cerco di trarre vantaggio da questo, per quanto possibile, e il mio sogno di sempre è quello di trasferirmi a vivere in un posto di mare. Purtroppo questo non è possibile al momento, così mentre aspetto che le cose cambino sto cercando di tradurre questa esigenza in uno stimolo positivo creativo.

Negli ultimi giorni ho scoperto alcune vecchie foto di costumi da bagno degli inizi del secolo scorso, e la cosa mi ha dato diversi spunti creativi. Alla fine dell'800 i primi costumi da bagno erano simili agli abiti normali, venivano realizzati con tessuti leggeri ma mantenendo la lunghezza delle gonne per questioni di pudore. Dovettero passare anni e centimetri di tessuto, fino a quando intorno al 1910 i costumi da bagno persero l'obbligo di dover camuffare i contorni del corpo femminile. Fortunatamente, durante questo lasso di tempo, le regole di pudicizia non avevano proibito di indulgere su decorazioni, disegni e colori. Questo ha permesso alle donne di adornare con righe pois e calze decorate i loro corpi copertissimi, in modo da sfuggire alla monotonia dei costumi dell'epoca.

Pensando a queste donne qualche giorno fa ho realizzato un nuovo pezzo della mia produzione di bambole, al quale sono veramente affezionata. Il suo nome è Adeline al mare, ed è un personaggio molto dolce della mia collezione. E' realizzata con pasta da modellare e decorata con un costume da bagno retrò in cotone stetch nero, con maniche bianche realizzate da una vecchia tela di cotone ricamata a mano. Adelina ha anche un salvagente in plastica rosa e decorato con tela di cotone e una cordicina. Pronta per fare un bagno meraviglioso!

Doodling a start

I've been wondering about creating a blog for a very long time. 

Finally, I decided to do it, not only because I wanted to share my work to other people, but also because I wanted to keep a diary of my tiny creative production.

How did this production start? I can't answer properly. I've been influenced from a lot of things, from folk art to contemporary art, from fairytales to reality. Every single piece that I realized has a long story behind, which started a long time ago, even before the object was even conceived. Many ideas, that were left behind for years, found a realization, and materials, that I build up because I loved the texture and their colour, found a place in a creation.

Tonight I start this blog by showing one of my last sold dolls. 

Its name is Frida the painter, and was obviously inspired by the hispano-american painter, whose work always fascinated me. 

As all of my dolls, it was realized in air dry modeling clay, and was painted with acrylics. Legs and arms can move and are connected by elastic thread. 

The hair is made from mohair wool and clothing has been realized from vintage fabrics of different kinds, that I chose for their color and their texture to recreate the particular style of the character represented. I wanted to join contrasting colours to create an interesting balance, taking cue from traditonal mexican costumes. 

It's a bit sad departing from a piece that I really loved creating, but it's also nice to think the fact that other people will own it. A new story beginning.

Ho riflettuto sulla possibilità di aprire un blog per molto molto tempo. 

E alla fine, mi sono decisa. Non solo perchè volevo diffondere il mio lavoro, ma anche perché volevo creare una sorta di diario per la mia piccola produzione creativa. 

Come è cominciata questa produzione? Non saprei dirlo di preciso. Sono stata influenzata da molte cose, dalla folk art all'arte contemporanea, dalle favole alla realtà. Ogni pezzo che ho realizzato ha una storia che è cominciata molto prima che venisse concepita. Molte idee che sono rimaste in disparte per anni hanno trovato una realizzazione, e materiali che ho accumulato perchè mi piacevano alla vista e al tatto, hanno trovato posto in una creazione. 

Stasera comincio questo blog mostrandovi una delle ultime bambole che ho venduto. 

Si chiama Frida the painter, ed è ovviamente ispirato dalla pittrice ispano-americana, il cui lavoro mi ha sempre affascinato. 

Come tutte le mie bambole, è realizzata in pasta per modellare, asciugata all'aria e dipinta con acrilici. Le gambe e le braccia sono semovibili e collegate con del filo elastico. 

I capelli sono stati realizzati con lana mohair mentre i vestiti sono stati cuciti a partire da tessuti vintage di diversa natura, che ho selezionato in base al colore e alla texture per ricreare lo stile del personaggio. Ho voluto accostare colori contrastanti creando un equilibrio interessante, prendendo spunto dai costumi tradizionali messicani.

E' strano separarsi da un pezzo che mi è piaciuto creare, ma è bello pensare al fatto che apparterrà ad altre persone. Una nuova storia che inizia.
